Topic/Skill: Applied reading/Vocabulary

Teacher: Angel

Teacher Presentation: Angel's class was very organized and structured. He began casually, asking each student what they did over the weekend.  He then explained the agenda for the day and the rest of the week. He reviewed the main points of the article they read the Friday before by asking students to summarize the main points, the key arguments, and the stakeholders. Next, the students worked in groups to complete the comprehension questions in their textbooks about the article. After each set of questions, Angel would bring everyone back for a class discussion. Finally, the class reviewed the vocabulary from the week before and then took the vocab quiz in the computer lab. 

Classroom Management: Angel made sure each student had a chance to share their opinions and did not let a few more outspoken students dominate the discussion. He encouraged students to correct their peer's errors during the group work, if done so politely. 

Materials: White board, markers, article in textbook, computer lab for vocabulary quiz. 

Student Participation: Students were engaged from the beginning when Angel asked about their weekends and reviewed from the week before. This intro
 established a more relaxed atmosphere and got student more focused for the class. Students were also very engaged in the group work and answered specific questions in the textbook together. They were not hesitant to ask questions. 

Feedback Provided: Angel walked around the room and corrected errors that he overheard. Then, during the group discussion, he brought up some more common errors regarding a few challenging vocabulary words.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Because the class was so structured, the students were very aware of the scaffolding process and the benefits of scaffolding in a reading class. Over the course of the week, the class focused on one major article, and Angel would remove scaffolding and reading support measures gradually.
