Jesse CP #5

Date/Time: 5/19/16; 3:30pm
Location: Dunkin Donuts

Topic discussed: Differences between various Latin American countries

Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: My CP shared that it is often frustrating when Americans think everyone who speaks Spanish is the same. She shared examples of cultural and linguistic differences between several Latin American countries, and even within countries.

We also discussed how cultural patterns come out in speaking patterns. For example, the verbose and wordy style (in comparison to English) of communicating in Spanish reflects the cultural importance of relationships and the context. Similar to a brief discussion in the TEFL class, my CP noted that many Americans say "hello, how are you?" and then keep walking without waiting for the response.
