Topic/Skill: Listening, Accents and schema

Feedback provided to tutee: It is important to bring in prior knowledge about a subject to help understand context and guess meaning. We discussed the importance of knowing the context of a situation to help understand unknown words and especially idioms. We also discussed how some accents are more difficult to understand than others, even though they are all English. We talked about how it is important to practice listening to different accents if you are planning on living or traveling in a certain region.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that my tutee was taught British pronunciation of English in school but that some British accents like Cockney are especially difficult to understand. I learned that it is important to take accents into account when teaching listening or speaking.
