Julia CP#5

Date/Time: 5.26.16 @ 1pm

Location: Cultural exchange in Candace’s class

Topic discussed: I spoke with Nicholas from Germany and he was only 18 years old, he hasn’t even graduated high school yet. He goes back at the end of the session to graduate. He had a list of questions he was given by his teacher to ask me and that I could ask him too. The questions were mostly family centered and focused on how I lived my life growing up and whom I lived with etc. I think he kind of thought the questions were silly because he kept expressing how this was mainly for the other students because living in America is a lot like living in Germany according to him.  He said the main difference is the education system. It is a lot stricter in Germany. He mentioned how he was applying to Stanford and I asked him where else he would go if he didn’t get in and he said if he didn’t get in there then he would stay in Germany for college because if he couldn’t get into a really good school here then he would stay since the universities in Germany are free and a lot better than some here.

Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: As far as family life goes it seems to be the same in Germany. He had the same lifestyle and grew up the same way as I did, minus the extreme school load.
