Nastasia TS #11

Date/Time: June 6th, 5:00pm

Location: Leon Public Library

Topic/Skill: Reading, Comprehension of Hot Air Balloon passage

Feedback provided to tutee: We discussed how to guess the meaning of words from context or by breaking down a word and comparing it to words with similar roots, e.g (thermometer, thermostat). Matthew was interested in how hot air balloons work and he was able to remember the main points of the passage. Matthew answered the topic and theme comprehension questions easily, but needed to refer back to find the answers to fine-detail questions. We talked about how it may help on tests to read the questions first in order to remember what to look for in the passage, and to build schema.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that Matthew likes understanding the price and workings of machinery such as engines and cars. I also learned that it is important to help a student be interested in the material but also to help them learn to do well when tested on material that isn't interesting.
