Topic discussed: Korean vs. American music and music industry
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I learned
that the Korean pop music industry is dominated by large companies like SM, YG,
and JYP. These companies have young boys and girls audition and then train as “trainees”
for years. They then debut as idols. I learned that some people look down on
idols because they believe they are not “real artists” for not writing their
own music or creating their own choreography. I explained the American music
industry to my partner. He learned that many big record labels have been around
for decades and they each are known for having their own sound. Many artists
audition for the labels and are then signed and promoted. He learned that if an
American artists sings a song that was given to them, or they preform
choreography that is not their own, they are rarely looked down on for it.
