Location: Books-A-Million
Topic/Skill: Pronunciation/adding “the” to proper nouns
Feedback provided to tutee: I realized Ki was using “the”
in front of some proper nouns that did not need “the” in front of them. For
example, “the Korea,” or “the Books-a-Million.” There is no clear-cut rule as
to when “the” can and cannot be used, however we went over some examples. For
instance, we talked about if he was stating a specific BAM location, then he
could say, “Let’s met at the BAM on Thomasville road.” After BAM is specified,
then he can say, “Let’s meet at BAM.” We discussed places like, “The White
House,” and “The Eiffel Tower,” and how “the” is part of their title, but how
places like Florida State University and Death Valley do not have “the” in
their title, so you should not add “the” to them.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I have
learned I have to be stern with Ki in regard to making him pay attention to my
error correction. He really likes taking notes of my corrections on his phone
but he does not care to practice or fix what I have corrected. I have learned
to wait until he is done typing his corrections on his phone to make him repeat
after me the correct pronunciation of words. I can’t let his stubbornness
affect my teaching.
