Breanna CO #1

Date/Time: 5/3/16

Topic/Skill: Speaking/Debate process

Teacher Presentation: Candace Warmka

Teacher Presentation: The instructor had the agenda on the board before the class started. The flow of the class period was good, she took sufficient time to review the material covered in the previous class (paraphrasing complex terms or ideas,) and she thoroughly explained the debate process and how to research the content the students will use in it.

Classroom Management: The class had a more laid-back vibe to it. Everyone seemed to really respect each other, but at the same time people were still able to talk freely, have conversations openly with other students and the professor. The instructor would ask the students questions regarding topics that may have come up in conversation and vice versa. There were no disciplinary actions that occurred in class.

Materials: Overhead projector, white board, markers, and a print out explaining the debate process more thoroughly.

Student Participation: The students responded to questions voluntarily. It was a smaller class, and it is an advanced speaking class, so all of the students seemed very confident and ready to speak.

Feedback Provided: There did not seem to be any error correction in this class period. I feel if I had observed the actual debate that was going to take place later in the week, I would have seen some error correction take place, but there was none today.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I noticed the instructor did not answer all of the students’ questions regarding what they will be learning in class. Sometimes she responded by saying, “you’ll see,” which is a nice way to allude to something exciting happening in the future. I also learned how to introduce a difficult and controversial topic to a class of ESL students. The instructor did a great job explaining their debate topic, the concept of universal healthcare, to the students and why it is a controversy in the U.S.
