Topic/Skill: Listening, Understanding of vocab and idioms
Feedback provided to tutee: We talked about how common words like "get" or "run" have many other meanings, and that we can guess meanings from the sentence and situation. We discussed the importance of context and context clues in order to figure out the meaning of words or idioms. Specifically we discussed the phrase "get it?" because it simply means "do you understand?". However, DoJun was confused because none of the dictionary definitions of "get"'s various meanings allowed him to understand what "get it?" meant. There were several words DoJun could not understand either because he was not familiar with the word or because it was difficult to understand in rapid speech.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that choosing level appropriate listening material is extraordinarily important for both the student's comprehension and morale. I learned that DoJun is interested in idioms, and that learning idioms and words' "other meanings" is important for understanding natural English conversation.
