Topic/Skill: j/y sounds, simple future tense
Feedback provided to tutee: In this session, Diana and I
started off by reviewing the pronunciation skills we worked on in our last
session. We did not focus too much on the short i and s/sh/ch sounds, but more
on the j/y sounds. Before we started reviewing, Diana told me about her
weekend, and I heard her use y sounds correctly on her own without hesitation.
She did great in the review of the j/y sounds. I told her to keep listening for
when other people, mostly native speakers, use j/y sounds. This way she can
hear the words that she needs to listen for when she is speaking, so she can be
aware of exactly what sound to make. We moved on to studying simple future
tense in order to prepare for her exams this week. Sometimes Diana says, “I
will taking a shower.” So we worked on correcting these types of errors.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you
learned: Working with Diana always reinforces how important a communicative
approach to teaching English really is. She learns and retains information better
when she is able to put what she has learned into words and phrases.
