Cultural Topics you and your partner learned: Pham wanted to go to Tropical Smoothie because she knew I would be able to find vegetarian friendly food there. We talked about her final exams and how prepared she felt for them. She said she felt nervous and very pressured to do well on her tests, simply because that’s how she was taught to feel about taking tests while growing up in Vietnam. I mentioned to her I was teaching a class later that day at CIES. We went on to discuss what it would be like for me to teach English in Vietnam. She told me I would most likely not teach in an elementary, middle or high school equivalent. Those schools usually have Vietnamese people teach English. Native English speakers will likely teach in an English-speaking center, which she said is comparable to CIES. She said many parents will send their children to these centers to learn English because they are more impactful and have a better system for teaching English than inside the school systems. She told me about her plans for her week off in between sessions. She is planning on going to go to Atlanta and visiting family, then probably just relaxing. I told her about my trip to New Orleans in a week and a half. We talked about the two different cities and the fun things you can do in both of them.
