Location: Books-A-Million
Topic/Skill: V and b sounds, r sounds, l sounds, -sion/-gin
Feedback provided to tutee: Most of the error correction
in this lesson consisted of v and b sounds. “Revise” was a word that was
visited again, as was “score.” I corrected “voluntary” which had v, l, and r
sounds in it. With this word specifically, I practiced started from the end of the
word and building backwards, by phonetically going “-ry,” “-tary,” “-untary,”
“voluntary,” until Ki was able to pronounce the word correctly. The major thing
I corrected was the word “version.” At first I thought I was only correcting
the v sound in the word, but when he repeated it for me, I heard him say the
word “virgin.” So we dedicated the rest of our time together to get him to
create a different sound between the two words. Slowly he was able to create
the different sounds at the end of the words in isolation (-sion and –gin) and
eventually he was able to say the two words and make them sound like two
separate words.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you
learned: After I write down the word in my notebook, I ask Ki to say it and
identify what was wrong with his pronunciation, and I underline that letter in the
word. I find that this helps Ki to stay focused on that word if he ever reuses
it again throughout the lesson. This lesson was also a testament to just how
difficult it can be for students to be able to make certain sounds. Ki had such
a difficult time creating those sounds, and it is so hard to teach a person to
shape their mouth a certain way! It was a test of patience but we eventually
broke ground! I was really proud.
