Feedback provided to tutee: I noticed Ki says the word
“probably” a lot, and he uses incorrectly. I noticed the error when I was correcting
his sentence, “probably they coming to help me move.” I was only trying to
correct his missing use of the verb “are,” but then I realized just how often
he uses “probably” to start his sentences, and it sounds kind of funny. For
example, “probably you are right,” “probably I am wrong,” etc. Throughout our
conversation he kept trying to correct himself every time he used the word
“probably,” but often he would not catch his mistake, so I would correct him.
Additionally, Ki talked about his experiences going to church in Tallahassee,
and he brought up the words religious, pious, and sincere. We talked about the
meanings of the definitions of the words and how they are different. He also
asked about social norms in the drinking/smoking culture in Tallahassee. He
explained how in Korea people never stand around and drink, they don’t party in
their houses, they eat while they are drinking, which seems very different from
here.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Ki has become much more aware of the pronunciation errors
we have been working on over the last few sessions. If he messes up on the
common words I have repeatedly corrected him on, such as professor, focus,
revise, etc., then he corrects himself right away before I can say or do
anything. However some words are still very difficult, such as usually.
