Topic/Skill: Past tense irregular verbs/trip to NYC and cooking
Feedback provided to tutee: This session I organized the
past tense irregular verbs in a series of categories related to topics. We only
got through two topics in this session because we spent a good bit of time
taking about our weekends (using past tense verbs of course). The topics
included traveling, using the irregular verbs: drove, flew, went, and left, and
cooking a meal using the irregular verbs: drank, ate, gave, grew, and made. We
started with the travel topic, and I told her to talk about any trip she has
gone on in the past, I gave her the list of verbs, I told her to try to use
these verbs as often as she could, but to focus more on the story of her trip.
She used so many past tense irregular verbs! I had to do very little error
correction in this session, I think she was just excited to communicate her
thoughts and talk about a trip that meant so much to her, and cooking, which is
one of her favorite hobbies.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I have
realized just how well Diana excels at using words in context. Giving her free
reign to practice these words in her normal conversation, in a communicative
approach has been very beneficial for her. I noticed her usage of irregular
past tense verbs improve so much more in this conversational approach than in
previous sessions.
