Breanna TS #2

Date/Time: 5/11/16 12:00 PM

Location: Books-A-Million

Topic/Skill: R sounds/Polite phrases

Feedback provided to tutee: A few words specifically we worked on in this session were “grading” and “scoring.” The R sound really gives Ki a difficult time. With a lot of these smaller words, we first started by focusing on the part of the word that gave him trouble. For example, I would have him say “gr,” a few times, then just the “r” sounds from “gr.” Then I had him say “gr-ade,” until he said it properly, until he was able to add the “-ing” onto “grading.” We also worked on “correct,” “recognize,” and breaking about the term “public administration.” He asked me about politely asking questions to a boss or superior. For example, his instinct is to ask, “Did you read my emails yet?” I told him it’s best to not use the word “yet” and change “did you” to “have you.”
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: During this session, Ki and I began having conversations, and in these conversations I corrected his pronunciation errors. In order to not interrupt his message, I wrote down the word he mispronounced in a notebook in front of me and I waited for him to complete the sentence he was saying. After he finished his sentence I asked him to say the word I wrote down and I asked him if he could hear what was wrong with it. This form of error correction really seemed to work for both Ki and I. I do not feel rude by interrupting him, and he is able to complete his message and try to figure out what is wrong with his own errors.
