Topic discussed: This was my first meeting with Zainab and I could tell
at first she was a little shy. Once we started talking she seemed to open up a
little more. She told me how she was over here with her older brother and only
moved here very recently. She has a lot of siblings still in Kuwait who she misses
a lot. Her brother who she is closest with is still in Kuwait and she said he
is getting married while she is here and she is sad she is missing it. I asked
her if she could just go back for a week or so and she explained to me how it
is hard since her visa is a student visa and it’s hard to leave and come back
on that. We also talked about how she likes living in America vs. Kuwait.
Although she misses her family, she said she is more free to be herself here
and love that. She said the guys that are in the CIES program with her that are
also from the Middle East give her a tough time sometimes because of the way
she dresses. She said sometimes she doesn’t feel comfortable around them
because she just wants to be able to dress the way she wants and not have
people talk about it.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I
realized how different it is here vs. different countries. We are “the land of
the free” and when I was talking to her I realized that this is very true in
some ways.
