On Wednesday May 4th 2016, I had the pleasure of
having my first tutoring session ever at LeRoy Collins public library with a
fifth grader named Matthew. I did not know what to expect since I have never
tutored or taught anything to anyone before. I also did not know how much
English Matthew knew, or even if he knew English at all. Upon entering the
Library I introduced myself to Matthew and his mother Sara; Sara explained that
she was from South Korea and that English was her second language. After a
minute of introducing ourselves, Matthew and I sat down and began his English
lesson. Matthew pulled out some vocabulary cards and I began to ask him the
definition of the various vocabulary words (such as flurry, congratulate,
disdain, appreciate, compliment, etc.). Matthew had at least thirty five to
forty of these flash cards so in the end going over vocabulary took up the
entire duration of Matthew and I’s first tutor session.
