Topic/Skill: Pre-Reading Schema Activation and Vocab-Building
Feedback provided to tutee: Dojun learned new words such as "Musher" and "Checkpoint" that he will encounter when we read Akiak. He also learned the word "Journey" and we discussed journeys that he's been on, his friends have been on, and journeys that he's read in books or seen in movies. One difficulty that P.J. encountered was that he sometimes responds to a question in the incorrect tense, so we discussed how to answer in the correct tense.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that activating Dojun's prior knowledge makes the lesson extremely enjoyable for him and it makes him much more engaged in the lesson. He loves to talk about how the new vocabulary connects to his own personal life and it helps him remember them.
