Kristen H. TS #4

Date/Time: 5/9 6:00pm

Tutee: Matthew Hong

Location: Public Library

Topic/Skill: School Homework/Poetry Analysis

Feedback provided to tutee: Instead of reading the star wars article with Matthew, he had actual school homework he needed help on, so we worked on that. The homework consisted of reading to simple poems, and analyzing them for literary devices and poetic structure, which I thought was pretty interesting considering Matthew's grade. Poetry isn't easy, and I found myself thankful for being a creative writing major at that moment, since it allowed to help explain to Matthew what things like "simile" and "metaphors" were. The homework had questions also regarding meter, rhythm, and tone, and at the end had the student write a brief essay about what the poem was trying to accomplish through its various literary structures.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Matthew seems to pay more attention to comprehension than his brother, but he stills struggles with understanding what affect literary devices achieve. He can recognize a simile and a metaphor, but he doesn't seem to know why they are used when they are. He seemed to gain a little bit more comprehension regarding the topic once I explained it, but definitely more analysis practice is needed. Also, Matthew reads too quickly and doesn't take pauses when there's a period. So more reading aloud practices with both brothers will be needed.
