Topic: health care in the US aka reasons to move elsewhere. I had planned on writing, but Justin had hurt his back and was wondering how to navigate the US healthcare system. My eyes swam with sympathy as I launched into the labyrinthine nightmare whose intricacies have sold textbooks. We started with insurance, luckily he has insurance because he is a researcher at FSU. Then we went to setting up an appointment with a general practitioner, with very precise instructions on what to say since talking on the phone is a source of anxiety. I also told him the word for check-up, instead of what he thought it should be: body check, which is a reasonable guess. After modeling the phone conversation, we talked about follow up appointments, HMOs, specialists, what is typically covered or not by insurance, etc. We also went over anatomical vocabulary like spine, nerves and how English speakers describe pain since doctors have red flags for certain kinds of pain. Ex burning under the skin typically means nerve damage; so that my tutee could get the care he needs.
