Topic/Skill: Assessment and reading
Feedback provided to tutee: Andy's father wanted me to work on some of his school homework with him, which took us about 15 minutes, then wanted me to focus on his pronunciation. I assessed Andy with some worksheet handouts that I had printed online and then we read a Bernstein Bears book. Although Andy took his time reading, as an 5 year old would, he was a very good reader and pronounced everything very well. I told his father his English is very good, especially for someone his age and for someone who comes from a non-English speaking home.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that I need to have a little more of a backbone when working with kids. Andy tended to wander in thought and got distracted easily, again like any normal 5 year old. I'm going to come up with more attention grabbing activities and focus on things he would be interested in so that he will stay focused and want to work on what we are learning.
