Topic discussed: Irregular verbs in the simple present tense.
Teacher presentation: It was very deductive. She explained the schedule for the day and what they were going to practice.
Classroom management: Teacher first conversed with students about their day, exchanging brief experiences and establishing a comfortable relationship. She then began a class activity by handing out whiteboards, markers, and erasers, then saying a verb the students had to conjugate in the simple present and write on their whiteboard. After that activity, the teacher went over a story about the "Lost People of Roanoke" and had students end the class writing an in class response to the story, and what they believed happened to the missing people.
Materials: whiteboard, markers, erasers.
Student Participation: very engaged, encouraged.
Feedback provided: Teacher went around the room while students wrote their essays and coached them to be more detailed, to use the simple present, and to motivate creative thought regarding the topic. She then went to the whiteboard as they continued to write, and addressed a number of "beautiful mistakes" she observed as she went around the room.
Lessons I learned: To build a comfortable atmosphere by developing a relationship with the students; to ease in to the activities and still tie them in to relevant experiences. Also, it was nice to see how the teacher coached and motivated the students instead of handing out corrections or settling for minor details.
