Topic discussed: My conversation partner applied to the FSU College of Engineering but is anxiously waiting for word from the admissions department. She asked me many questions about logistics and campus life at FSU, TCC, and FAMU. I introduced her to the Center for Global Engagement as a resource for international FSU students.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: My conversation partner expressed that she is feeling anxious and frustrated with her English language learning. We discussed how common it is to experience a period of time when learning progress slows, like a "plateau". I have experienced this in my Spanish learning also, so we brainstormed ways to address the frustration associated with this "plateau". We both agree that stressful classroom environments do not support our language learning styles and enjoy learning through interaction, both in and outside the classroom.
