Jessica L. TS #4

Date/Time: 5/17/16, 3pm

Location: CIES classroom

Topic/Skill: Introduction/ Needs Assessment

Feedback provided to tutee: This was the first session with my adult tutee Fadia who is in Group 2 at CIES, and I found out she is studying chemical engineering and her job in Kuwait sent her here to improve her English. She wants to focus on grammar and speaking, and I quickly noticed she often omits connector words that make sentences grammatically correct when speaking.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Fadia showed me her past grammar lesson with Professor Candace on the words "used to", "used to have ", "used to be", and  "would", and I helped explain in more detail how to use them and the differences. I realized how difficult it is to explain something when you've always just known it to be that way. Fadia has trouble remembering vocabulary that is very similar to other vocabulary, like synonyms. I gave her examples of sentences using those words that showcase the differences among them, and wrote down things to remember about each word phrase. It helped to indicate things that would help her remember differences, and she was able to understand more. I learned that there are some things about grammar that you cannot always fully explain, and you must just give examples of exceptions and leave it at that.
