Writing/Grammar/Assessment of Needs
My first tutor session was with Matthew Hong, a fourth grader. He's pretty good at math and science, but when it comes to writing and reading, he has no interest in learning to improve on these subjects. His mother informed me that she would like me to focus on writing and grammar in our lessons. Since it was the first time meeting him, I decided to get to know him a bit, find out what he likes and what interests him. He likes scary stories, so for our first exercise we both just wrote scary stories and then read them to each other. I used this to gauge where he was at writing wise. He doesn't have great handwriting, and his spelling is iffy, however, when I make him read what he writes out loud, he recognizes his errors and knows how to correct them.
What I learned: He struggles with punctuation, fluidity of thought when writing, and detailing content.
