Date/Time: 5/12/16 11:00am
Topic/Skill: Reading- News articles, story books
Teacher
Presentation: The teacher had students read sections from the Nole News article while reviewing any unknown vocabulary. She then handed back and reviewed a comprehension quiz and reading log. Finally, the instructor handed out story books. Both the instructor and students read passages aloud. She preformed comprehension checks on both the content and vocabulary of the story.
Classroom
Management: Sometimes the students would go on their cellphones, so the instructor made light of the situation and collected the students phones at the front of the table. Also the students would speak in their own language instead of English. When this happened, the instructor would reinforce that they should speak English.
Materials: Nole News article, pencils, notebook, computer, projector, story books, marker, whiteboard
Student
Participation: The students took turns reading sections of the article and book. They also answered questions on the passages they read and gave their opinions. The students participated in pair work by summarizing the story to their partner.
Feedback
Provided: The instructor reviewed a comprehension quiz from the day before in class and went over the answers. She also handed back reading logs with comments on both grammar and content. The instructor would also write difficult vocabulary on the board.
Lesson(s) on
teaching you learned: I learned that it is extraordinarily important to pick level appropriate reading materials. It is also important to have students read materials that contain information and words that are relevant to their lives. This encourages interest in the material, reinforces that language is a means of communication, and helps students learn useful vocabulary for their every-day lives.
